SEC Reign? Can Georgia or Texas End the Big Ten’s National Championship Streak (2026)

The Big Ten is celebrating a three-peat in college football, but can the SEC reclaim its throne? It seems the Big Ten Conference is quite pleased with itself, even releasing a t-shirt proclaiming "B1G TRIFECTA" to commemorate their three consecutive College Football Playoff national championships. This latest move is just another way they're playfully reminding everyone that the SEC hasn't clinched a national title since 2022. Remember, that was the second of two straight CFP wins for Georgia, which capped off an era of SEC dominance where they won six out of eight national championships between 2015 and 2022, including a remarkable four in a row before the Big Ten broke the streak.

Even the renowned "Mouth of the South," ESPN's Paul Finebaum, has had to swallow his pride and admit the Big Ten's current grip on college football. But here's where it gets interesting: Finebaum hasn't given up on the SEC entirely! He's identified a few teams he believes have the potential to dethrone the Big Ten.

"If you're being realistic, you have to look at the strongest SEC teams returning," Finebaum stated during a recent radio appearance. He believes Georgia and Texas are neck-and-neck, with either being capable of a championship run, depending on how things unfold. "I don't see much beyond that," he added. While he considers Texas A&M a "wildcard" and LSU a definite Playoff contender, he's not yet convinced they can go all the way. As for Alabama, he admits he's "not confident in them right now."

And this is the part most people miss: Both Georgia and Texas are stacked with talent and boast experienced quarterbacks like Gunner Stockton and Arch Manning, who are already considered top Heisman Trophy contenders. However, Finebaum's confidence wavers when discussing other SEC powerhouses, including Alabama, which is navigating a crucial offseason under new coach Kalen DeBoer.

But with significant talent departing the Big Ten for the NFL and even Indiana moving on from their Heisman-winning QB, the door could be wide open for the SEC in 2026. "I boldly said last year – and, by the way, I said it because I believed it – the SEC would win (the 2025 national championship). I thought Georgia and Texas had the best chance, and I still think they do," Finebaum reiterated. He's less certain about the Big Ten's outlook for next year, noting the absence of a clear "super team" and the unpredictability of a team like Indiana. "So, I feel like, after a very long and meandering answer, there are at least two (SEC contenders) and maybe one or two more."

What do you think? Are Georgia and Texas the SEC's best hope, or is another team poised to surprise everyone? Can the SEC reclaim its championship glory, or will the Big Ten continue its reign? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
